Loungewear is supposed to be the easy part of getting dressed, yet picking a size online can feel like guesswork. The fix is not a better guess. It is knowing which of two kinds of size chart you are looking at, and then taking one measurement at home.
Two kinds of chart
A garment chart measures the piece itself: the sweatshirt laid flat, the pants from waistband to hem. A body chart measures a person: the bust, the natural waist, the hips. The numbers look similar, but they answer different questions. A garment chart tells you how much room the piece has; a body chart tells you which body measurements the piece was cut for.
You can usually tell them apart at a glance. Relaxed lounge sets are cut with room, so a garment chart often lists a bust measurement for size S that is well above the body measurement of most people who wear an S. On our product pages, we say so when a chart shows body measurements.
Reading a garment chart
Take a top or pair of pants you already like the fit of and lay it flat on a table, smoothed out but not stretched.
- Bust: measure straight across, about one inch below the armholes, and double the number.
- Top length: from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem.
- Waist or hip (pants): straight across the waistband or the widest part of the hips, doubled. Elastic waistbands are measured relaxed.
- Inseam: from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the hem.
Compare your numbers with the chart and choose the size closest to the piece you already like. If you prefer a roomier fit than your reference piece, move one size up.
Reading a body chart
Use a soft tape measure, snug but not tight, over light clothing.
- Bust: around the fullest part, with the tape level across your back.
- Waist: around your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso.
- Hips: around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
If your measurements fall in two different sizes, let the more fitted piece decide: for a boxy tee with shorts, go by your hip measurement.
When a style runs small
Some styles run smaller than usual letter sizes. When one does, the product page says so and tells you which size to order. Knit sets are the most common case.
